Reiki is the time-honored art of “Laying on of the Hands” for healing purposes. While wise women, medicine men, priests, shamans, prophets, healers and the like have been channeling the healing energy of the universe through their hands to bring balance and health to their patients since time immemorial, the term “Reiki” comes from Dr. Usui, a Japanese medical doctor and wise man who had a profound enlightenment experience in the late 1800’s.
At the end of a 21 day vision quest upon Mount Kuramayama in Japan, Dr. Usui was given a vision of several ancient shamanic symbols which open up and intensify the channels of healing universal life force/energy/spirit through one’s palms. With these symbols he developed the practice of Reiki as we know it today, which is passed down ceremonially from teacher to student in a series of “attunements.”
Reiki translates as Rei=Universe and Ki=Spirit/Energy, therefore Reiki is simply the flow of Universal Life Force Energy (God, Love, Spirit, etc…) into whoever or whatever is being given Reiki. Reiki feels wonderful, it is warm, soothing and relaxing on all levels. Reiki is a wonderful compliment to other healing work, or delightful on its own.
